A Lack of Sleep is Bad for Your Genes

According to Yahoo! News, lack of sleep is bad for our genes. Studies have shown that if we practice the habit of lack of sleep, it has a potential harmful effect on the gene expression.

The effects of lack of sleep are:

  • Damaging effects on our genes
  • Can result to heart disease, cognitive impairment, and obesity

Sleep researcher Derk-Jan Dijk and his fellow researchers have found that sleep six hours or less a night for a week affects the expression of some 711 genes including those involved in inflammation, immunity, and stress response.

A normal night sleep a day for a healthy adult is between seven and eight hours.
